Sad news, David O'Connor, late RA and Int Corps, SOO 13 in 1975/1976 died in Cheltenham aged 88 yrs in late February 2024. Funeral at Charlton Kings 22 March 2024. No further details.

Lt Col (QM) Brian Cleaver passed away on Wednesday 6 July in a home near Ripon. He had lived at Easingwold and been ill for some time.

The Milch Bar in Heinsberg. The rugby team used it a lot. Also The Hotel Corsten and the Dances held there on German festivals? My demob party with was held at the Beatrix in Vlodrop. I can still remember the hangover!

Around 700 residents were evacuated late on Friday after a dam broke in the town of Wassenberg near Cologne, authorities said.
But Wassenberg mayor Marcel Maurer said water levels had been stabilising since the night. "It's too early to give the all-clear but we are cautiously optimistic," he said.

We have received a contact message from Lynda Jarrold via our website. Lynda asked if any of our members remember her late husband Paul Jarrold. He was a Spec Op 1964-86 and served most of his years posted to either 13 Sigs or 9 Sigs in Cyprus. She and he met at Garretts Hay Barracks. Lynda was ANSI before they married. He died very recently and she wondered if any of your members remembered him. I have invited Lynda to our Facebook page, hopefully she will be able to join us to read any memories shared. If not, I will pass them on by email.

We have been asked for help. Can you remember Ernest?
My late Father, 149843 WOII Ernest Simpson died in March 1986; I am trying to stitch together his military service - I am estranged from my siblings and have found out through my own research this weekend that what I thought was his experience pales into insignificance with what I have just learnt.
He would have been at Munster with 2 Special Wireless Regiment after serving with this Unit in Palestine - 45-48 - before returning to the UK, getting married (1949) and then going to Munster for a period before going to the UK around 1951, working at what became GCHQ up to mid '57, returning to Cyprus ( 57 - 61 or 62 0 and seeing out his service at Garats Hay.
I realise this is a long shot but if any of your members or their families can help me to piece together this incredible but far from rare story it would help me - I have had a massively emotional shock today and I want to be able to pass this info on to my kids.
"Ernie" was married to "Joy" - she was a cipher clerk in Hut 3 or 6 Traffic Analysis Section, SIXTA, Bletchley Park

It is with great regret that the decision to cancel this years Reunion at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport has been taken, the main reason is that it would not be possible for us to congregate in our usual manner so the committee think that it is just not viable as we do not know what might happen before September, Anyone who has booked for this year can either get their deposit back from the hotel or carry it forward to next year which has already been booked for the weekend commencing Thursday 16th September 2021. We are all going to miss the reunion but we think it is for the best in these strange times. Members should have received an email with this announcement. We will all miss each other this year, for a lot of us it is the first time in many years that we have not met up.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform members of the passing of Margaret Langley wife of George Langley.. She had been ill since Feb/Mar with pancreatic cancer and although she fought bravely, she lost the fight in the early hours of this morning.
Margaret was an enthusiastic supporter of the BVA, the Corps and especially the British Legion and her had work for the Legion will be missed.
I have no information at this time regarding funeral arrangements but I am more than happy for members to e mail me if they wish.

Ken, here's what I know. This week, 13 Signal Regiment reformed as the Army’s first defensive cyber regiment, with a small parade at Blandford Camp where personnel from 259 Signals Squadron have been presented with their new 1 Signal Brigade badge. Under operational command of 6 (UK) Division, the unit will provide the Army’s cyber defence expertise and contribution to Defence’s federated cyber defence model.

Hope everyone is doing well, just thought I'd pass something that was to me quite funny. Yesterday was one of our winter days and by Florida standards very cold, just about touched freezing in places.
Florida has a lot of Iguana lizards, not native to this state introduced by collectors and they are everywhere in the southern/central part of the state.
Part of the weather forecast yesterday, was," Beware of Falling Iguana's " they are cold blooded and the freezing weather immobilized them, they are quite big animals and they were falling out of the trees. No one was injured by this and I don't think any of the Iguanas were hurt, just a little shocked.

In September 1961 I was a sprog in 13 Signals Regiment, Birgelen. And here I am again, a sprog yet again. Please treat me gently! I spent just over a year in what I thought was a holiday camp. I came from a pretty rough area of Liverpool, so anything seemed a holiday camp. It wasn’t pretty rough, it was just rough!! Three meals a day here, and supper if you wanted. My first taste of curry, and I have been addicted ever since. My first view of a green woodpecker from the verandah at the end of the comms room - within yards of me - magnificent! I am racking my failing memory for friends I made, but here are a few to be getting on with, Chippy Woods, from Birmingham, Dicky Phillips from New Forest, Derek Hodge -was in Loughborough last I heard. Sandy Sanderson, Hull, joined us from Cyprus. Anybody with Reg number starting 2384xxxx would be around in my time. I was a 3 year Regular, having missed the National Service call up, so enlisted first day I could.

Sad news received via Fred Searle. One of our long serving members, John (Rusty) Rosson has passed away after being poorly for some time. He is survived by his wife Eileen and daughter Carol. I'm sure there are many BVA members who remember fellow BVA members Dave & Jackie (Alf) Wilson, both I Corps, who were married at 9 SR in Cyprus back in 1970/71. Dave under-went surgery for the removal of a large brain tumour in 2017 followed by extensive chemo therapy. A second smaller tumour was removed in June this year and Dave is now practically bed-bound and has to use a wheel chair when not. Irene & I visited them a few weeks ago and found both he and Jackie in good spirits coping well with their situation. I am sure a message or two from old friends would be most welcome. The RBL Y Services (Garats Hay) Branch will be having a new Branch Standard dedicated on Sunday 19 August 2018 commencing at 1600hrs. The old Standard will also be laid up in the church. Sad news I'm afraid. Derek (Foxy) Fowler passed away on 12th of July, just after 11pm whilst in St Michael's Hospice in Harrogate. His wife Jackie has announced that "His funeral will take place at 12.20pm on Thursday 26th July at Stonefall Crematorium, Harrogate. Afterwards we are hoping to go to Bilton Cricket Club (still to be confirmed). Family flowers only, but if you wish donations to St Michael's Hospice Harrogate would be greatly appreciated. Sadly, I have to report that another of our members that has left us this year. I have just found out that Robbie Burns, Major retired, left us on the 28th of January 2018. Robbie was one of our long serving members who joined in 2000. May he rest in peace.

My brother, Sgt George Wraith, passed away on 27th January 2018 in Truro Cornwall.
He and I were Spec Ops in Birglen throughout the 1960s.
He had postings at various outstations in Germany, Javer and I think Langy + others.
We were both in 651 in Singapore and Borneo, and we spent a little time at RAF Gatow Berlin.

Betty Crane, wife of WOII Jack Crane, passed away this morning at 0700. She was being looked after at home by her three daughters, Susan, Denise and Lynette Jack was one of the old school but I am sure there are many of us left who will remember him.

Another eventful year is about to pass.
The New year will herald significant changes in how the BVA. is both managed and run. What is clear is that we shall continue to exist but on a very informal basis only.
It will have been 17 years since I founded the BVA and I would like to place on record my thanks to all members and the various committees, for their hard work, dedication and personal support. It could not have been done without you.
It would be fantastic if we could all make an effort to attend this years 'wrap up reunion' to finalise 17 wonderful years.

I would like to suggest that in dispersing the accrued funds that consideration is given to the RBL Y Services Branch in particular the fund it has established to improve and maintain the Y Services Plot at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA). This plot, one of the first at the NMA, recognizes and remembers the work and sacrifices of all in the Y Service family wherever and whenever they served and of course Birgelen and its several outstations was a huge part of this important part of Y Service history.

A big thanks to the organising Committee for a great weekend at the BVA reunion.
Whilst still using the name of the BVA, It has been decided to restructure it into an informal group by which we can dispense with an organising Committee and the heavy burden placed upon the Secretary.
This procedure will probably take about a year and further details will be released by the Committee.
I would like to thank all those who have give me and the BVA such unstinting support throughout the past 17 years.
The BVA will continue to survive and our unique friendships maintained.

to lead the BVA through some difficult years and I am sorry to see him go.
The BVA has lost its leading lights with the retirements of both our Chairman and Secretary.

Call for AGM Proposals: The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Birgelen Veterans Association (BVA) will be held at The Cavendish, in Torquay, on Sunday, 24 September 2017. As we now have a postal voting system, the Secretary will need to be in receipt of any proposals for the AGM by Sunday, 13 August 2017. Any proposal by a member of the BVA must be seconded by another member of the Association.
Any proposals received will then be circulated to those who have registered for postal voting. Just a reminder that the current Secretary/Treasurer is not seeking re-election so we will be looking for a volunteer to take up those duties. There will also be a vacancy for the Reunion Committee, including Wire Magazine Representative.

I was saddened to read of the resignation of our Secretary, Michael Morby.
He has done a remarkably difficult job very well over the past four years and has continually strived to make the BVA more inclusive.

I remember the asparagus wrapped in ham with a mild cheese sauce over served with new potatoes and salad, delicious! I also remember drinking with him and then HE would take us back to Keltenstrasse. I've only just picked up the sad news of Joseph Wilms' passing. I assume he is the same Joseph we met in 1955 when we transferred to B from Munster. We found the Wilms family (Joseph, Maria and Frau Wilms) to be most welcoming, friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed thier company on many a quiet afternoon 'off watch'.

(From RSA Admin on behalf of NIVA) As August 2019 will be the 50th Anniversary of the start of Operation Banner, the Northern Ireland Veterans Association (NIVA), are organising a Drumhead Service and March in Lisburn Northern Ireland on Saturday 17th August 2019 at 1100 hrs. This invitation also extends to Veterans Families and the Bereaved Families of those lost during the conflict. The Drumhead Service will be held in the City’s Wallace Park and will be followed by an approx. 2 mile parade around the city centre. Three main points will be taken in: The War Memorial; The UDR Monument and the site of the 1988 Lisburn Fun Run Bomb.

Very sad news about Jim. Jackie Fowler is in contact with his wife Pauline. The Association will be making a donation to Parkinson's UK in memory of Jim. The details for Jim's funeral are as follows: 28th February at 12pm at Blessed Sacrament Church, Walton Vale, Liverpool L9, followed after at Park Hotel, Dunningsbridge Road, Netherton, Liverpool L30 6YN.

Sad news only just received- Jim Creaby had a heart attack last Sunday morning and passed away shortly after. His family are all shocked as it was so very sudden and whilst Jim had suffered with Parkinson’s Disease for some years, he was still full of zest and had celebrated his 70th birthday in style last August.

Eric Fidler (Phil), Phil's daughter Erica Towsey, MBE, has been in contact:
"I am writing to let you know that my Dad passed away on Thursday 12 January at La Fontana Nursing Home, Martock, Somerset after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He is now at peace and free from his suffering.
His funeral will take place on Friday 27 January at 1.30 pm at All Saints Church, Martock followed by a reception at the White Hart Hotel, Martock.
Immediate family members only will proceed to the crematorium for the 2.40
pm committal and return to join guests at The White Hart.
My family and I would be delighted if you or your representative could join us at Eric's funeral service and reception. Please let me know by 23 January so that I may let the hotel have numbers for catering purposes.
There will only be flowers from Eric's immediate family, but donations to
the Alzheimer's Society in his memory would be welcome via the funeral director, David Rivett Funeral Directors, Yeovil."

Back in comms at last. We have moved to a bungalow as I now have a new metal knee and my son watched Margaret and I struggling to get up the stairs. Our new address is 7leapingwell lane Winslow Bucks MK18 3LU. 01296714514. the only fly in the ointment was BT took six weeks and a day to change the phone and internet etc including giving us a load of new phone numb ers that were not wanted.

I would like to thank the BVA committee for all their endeavours on our behalf over the preceding year.
As we all get older, attendance at our reunions and the interest in our association aims unfortunately diminish. The committee work hard to
maintain our association and family ties.
One important way of helping them is to support them at our annual reunion. This is not only a fantastic way of re kindling old and making new friendships, it is also critical in maintaining our nominated charity and to assisting any member who find themselves in dire circumstances. So please, let us all endeavour to make the 2017 annual reunion, the best ever.
I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of our committee to wish all members of the BVA and their families, a very Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

(Posted by Ted Haslam on FB) It is with a sad heart that I share with BVA friends the passing of Maj (Retd) Wally Lockwood. Wally, who is the brother-in-law of my partner, passed away this afternoon in a Care Home in Babbacombe. Wally served at Birgelen around 1973/74 in several posts. Just after I arrived, in September 73, he became SSM 1 Squadron, then moved to the Training Wing. He left on promotion to WO1 and was posted to Colchester. Val and I have been visiting him every week, he was suffering from Dementia and around 4 weeks ago was subjected to a major heart attack. I saw him late this afternoon when he was at peace and free from his illnesses. RIP my soldier friend.

I totally agree with Keith's comment about people not bothering to vote. I have never attended, as I have mentioned a couple of years ago because of the distance from my home.[Seaham. Co.Durham.] It is a 8+ hr journey, and the thought of having to do it after a weekend of alcohol is something I would not entertain. Plus I am no longer a spring chicken. However I was pleased that e mail voting arrived. I voted for a more central venue, and was disappointed that there was a poor voting return such that the venue remains in the same location. So I will never attend a reunion in Torquay. But it was a fair democratic vote, and I accept that. So to those who complain I say. Stop moaning and do something about it, and vote for change.
Otherwise it will die in its current form.

In answer to your Posts (Barry and Brian). A vote was taken for the venue for next year, the results can be found in the AGM Minutes. Not many people could be bothered to vote (As was the same for the Position of President) Torquay won again because members voted for it. If members don't want to vote we can't make them, I don't know whether you two voted but the committee agreed to voting by mail and email and it still made no difference, obviously the members who voted like Torquay. There are reunions happening in various parts of the country now, whih is a good thing and I welcome it. The format of the AGM could well be changed in the future but certainly for next year its Torquay here we come.

Following on from Brian Barkers remarks about the falling numbers and the location of the annual BVA event, I have to agree with his remarks. I too have voiced concerns about Torquay as the venue, despite the welcoming hotel / prices and the fact that it is a great location for a weekend. Having attended the first 5 events, I found that it became increasingly difficut and stressful to travel to and from the SW from the North of England. I respectfully ask that the Committee start looking for a location more central in the country, even if it means arranging a Gala dinner, with members making their own accommodation arrangements. Unlike Brian, I don't think that the formality of the AGM makes a difference to most, because it gives us an overall picture of what is going on and how the money is being used etc. I look forward to comments from the committee and members. Having read the recent AGM minutes, there seems to be a problem in attracting members to the weekend at Torquay. The venue seems to be a deciding factor - the members who attend like the venue and vote to continue to attend there, but it is so far away from the majority of the membership, only the few will attend! This is the attraction of the Loughborough Meeting which is informal! I don't attend due to my spending so much of my year abroad, but given the choice, the points noted would be foremost in my decision. I have no problem in the current members attending Torquay, as they do enjoy the weekend and will continue to do so, but the remainder of the membership will never attend en-masse, as they do not appreciate the 'formality' of the meeting! Obviously this is my own opinion, and, as I'm no longer a serving Soldier, I can voice my opinion without fear of retribution!! Others will have their own opinions, and are welcome to voice them!

Good morning all. As I mentioned, the 3 venues for next year's AGM Weekend are Torquay, Skegness and Lytham St Anne's. The hotel in Skegness (Royal Hotel) has a good Trip Advisor rating, as does the Aston Park Hotel in Lytham. The Cavendish in Torquay is well known by those who have been visiting over the years. Take a look and make up your own minds before we hold the vote. The estimated prices for the weekend packages with be circulated with the voting information.

AGM & Venue 2017. Jeff Ronald Arthur Charles Jephcote and his sub-committee have sent in options for consideration by members, all suggested by our members. To make the vote viable, the list has been reduced to 3 (Torquay, Skegness, Lytham St Annes) which will be put to the vote in the coming days. Register with me if you want to take part in selecting where we gather next year. Those of you who already have voting numbers, those will apply for this our 2nd vote, and all future votes. The final part of vote counting for President and a new Venue will be by those members who attend AGM 2016 and haven't already voted by email. More information on the venues will be released in the coming days - this should allow you to do some homework and find your favourite of the 3 before voting. We intend to run this option annually so venues/regions that didn't make the shortlist this year may well be considered in the future. Please feel free to discuss.

Very sad to hear the news concerning the loss of Pete Holleran (1946-2016). Pete was in the Royal Signals and served at Birgelen, 3 Sqn, and Dannenberg during his time the Regiment (1970-1975). He also did linguistic training at Cheltenham during that period.

To all members. I will be sending out my proposal for BVA Membership voting to all members tomorrow. I have chosen to go with voting by email. Broadly, it will require each member to register for voting with the Secretary. A member who registers to vote will receive an acknowledgement and unique voting number for later use. Polling for votes on proposals will be through registered voting members only. You will be able to choose the Chairman, or another member attending the AGM,to vote on your behalf. Those attending the AGM are not required to vote by post. Non-email members will also have to register to vote.

The details are not known to me but my basic research would indicate that a Major John Alexander MBE passed away January 20th 2013. His family were with him when he passed away. I went to see Tony a couple of weeks ago. I have asked Irene to pass on details of funeral arrangements when available. From RSA Re: Royal Hospital Chelsea, Founder’s Day 2016 will take place on 9 June at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Association (RSA) has been allocated tickets for this event and bids for the chance of a place are requested from branch members. The bids unfortunately cannot be accepted by them direct and so must go through the RSA Secretary.
Please pass this information on to your members and ask them to contact me for the chance of a ticket to attend this very enjoyable day. Tickets are sent out direct from Chelsea so I need to know full names the postal address for despatch of the tickets - where a member would like to bring a partner with them I need to know their full name too.

ACKROYD Roger Andrew Passed away peacefully aged 60 years on February 22, under the gentle care of the staff at Manorlands Hospice. His funeral service will take place at Skipton Crematorium on Wednesday, March 2, at 12.20pm. No other details but a check of his Facebook Page indicates that he passed away on Monday 21st February and that his funeral is at Skipton Crematorium on the March 2nd at 12:20. Hi All - a somewhat sad start to the new year. You would have already seen the loss of Jim "Thumbs" Hammond, who emigrated to Australia late 80's. A real character and we shared many a laugh together. Further, for those who may have known him at 13 Sigs and 224, along with members of the RSA Loughborough & District Branch, we are attending Ken (Haidyn Winston) Harding's funeral this afternoon in Shepshed. Ken spent the latter part of his life in a local home, suffering from severe dementia. Finally, last Thursday Elsie Armstrong lost her battle with cancer and passed away. Our condolences go to Ray on the loss of this lovely lady and his wife of 55 years. A memorial service is to be held at St Martins, Ruislip, Middlesex, HA4 8DG on the 19 Feb 16 at 1430 hours. RIP Elsie and Ken. Happy memories.

RHQ Announcement. It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the death of our Wire Editor, Major (Retired) Keith Pritchard. Keith had very recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and died as a result of complications whilst undergoing tests at Dorchester Hospital on Saturday 23 January 2016. Highly regarded and respected, Keith will be sorely missed by all who knew him and, in particular, all RHQ staff and the Corps golfing and rugby fraternities. CERTA CITO.

As the founder of both the BVA and the website the advent of FB has had a diminutive affect on the website usage and this to me is a little sad. That said, FB seems to be popular and allows our membership to communicate in a way the website doesn't. Both will inevitably decline as our membership gets older so any avenue which prolongs the inevitable, is to my mind welcome. Best wishes

You make a valid point Bob concerning lack of activity but one that has been made before. To differentiate between obits and comic chatter a Members Forum was launched but this proved no more effective in encouraging more traffic than this message board; probably no more than 6 members posted on the forum so it was discontinued. BVA on Facebook however is very active and there is a lot of traffic with news views and even daily weather reports. I suggest birgelenvets.org provides the depth in information and archived material, photos etc and to some extent greater security than Facebook. PS Glad to hear you are still on this earth!

Yep, you are correct. This is a {family] association, but like all families, the only time I log into it, I read of comrades who have died and condolences from those who knew them. What happened to the BVA? I assumed it existed for people to stay in touch and generally make topical or light hearted comments or even advice for anyone who requires it. Apart from deaths and the annual "Happy New Year" messages it is completely boring and I wonder how many others feel the same way. Yes,comrades die,and it saddens us all, but this is not an obituary column. It is to communicate all aspects of our lives, and share with what is a close and unique family. Hopefully my comments will stir some activity into this somewhat benign Bob. Williamson.

Graham Eagle and Ted Haslam, who without their support and guidance, I probably wouldn't have become a Spec Op. Roy "Tich" Lee who I went through training with is another name that springs to mind, as does Paul Yoeman and John Chduleigh. (John we shared a very cold and noisy Hercules to NI). A quick mention to Pauline Sewell, I knew your husband Alf really well and served with him in D Troop. If memory serves me correctly we had one or two excellent shindigs and he was a good friend and mentor. RIP Alf. This is my third attempt over the past 36 hours at making a post on a subject that I think those BVA members who are also members of the The Royal British Legion should be aware of. Especially, if you pay by Direct Debit. Two days ago I checked my bank account online. I have one Standing Order for the annual membership to the RBL 'Y' Branch but two were showing. The second was for a Charles Novacroft who I have never heard of and promptly cancelled. I then contacted Customer Service and asked just who this person was and how did this person have access to my account. The representative was extremely helpful. If you Google Charles Novacroft Direct Ltd you will see that this man has quite a few business interests and is connected with the RBL. His company will be handling your Direct Debit. Personally, I don't think that the RBL has the right to pass my personal banking details to a third party without my permission. Especially in this day and age of identity theft. I wrote to the the Secretary of the Branch and to his credit, gave me a lengthy explanation as to why this company was involved. He also informed me that all members had or were supposed to have been informed of this change by Novacroft. I never was and would be curious to know if any members were. I have no wish to belong to any organization that uses deceitful practices and I promptly cancelled my Direct Debit and membership. ¡Adios RBL! I hope some of you will find this informative.

BFPS Issues Armistice Day Cover in Remembrance
Armistice Day, held on 11 November every year, commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on 11 November 1918 - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. After the end of World War I, Armistice Day was marked each year by a two-minute silence at 11am, a chance for people to stop and remember the 20 million who died during the conflict. Now the two-minute silence is more often held on Remembrance Sunday, the Sunday closest to Armistice Day, which is a day of remembrance for all those killed in war.
For the first time, BFPS will issue a special commemorative cover on the 11 November 2015 to mark this poignant event.
The main image of this thought-provoking cover is from an original oil painting by Army artist Richard Salter. The Royal Mail issued stamp ‘Poppy’ has been used and will be cancelled by the exclusive ‘We Will Remember Them’ special handstamp, designed especially for the occasion. The postmark also bears the unique serial number ‘British Forces Postal Service 3195’.
Brigadier Tweedie Brown CBE said, “A unique combination of insightful art, powerful sentiment and sympathetic philately makes the 2015 Armistice Day Cover in Remembrance very special; a must for the collector and a lasting memento for those who appreciate the sacrifices made on their behalf.â€
The cover will be available in two versions as follows:
• Standard unsigned.
• Limited Edition of 100 signed by the artist Richard Salter.
The standard and signed covers will be available to order from the 6th October 2015 on a strictly first-come-first-served basis from the BFPS online shop (www.bfps.org.uk/shop). They cost just £6 for the unsigned versions and £12 for the signed versions (UK/BFPO p&p free). Fred Searle has been in touch with our President, General Peter, on a regular basis. During the latest conversation, General Peter, who is extremely frail, mentioned that he is unlikely to make it to Langeleben, or the BVA reunion. He is very concerned that he has not been in touch to convey his regrets personally and as asked that Fred do so for him. He hopes that all attending the reunion will enjoy it and adhere to the family traditions of the association and wishes the BVA continuing success in its endeavours. Both he and Gail wish to thank all members for their past and continuing friendship.

Regarding the passing of David Nobbs who wrote the Reggie Perrin series and was also responsible for some of the material for the 2 Ronnies and also wrote many books.He went to Catterick in July 1953 to serve with the Signals the same month and year as myself,he went on the Officers training course but failed, and then went to Loughborough for the Op Specs course, after passing out he went to Munster and then to Birgelen, and was demobbed at Newton Abbot, exactly the same path that I took.David said that he picked up most of his humour from his Army days. He was a very intelligent and humorous man, no wonder he became an Op Spec.

Between 1953-55, he served in the Royal Signals, in Germany where, as Signalman Nobbs, he monitored Soviet Bloc radio communications.

The public will be invited to the Thiepval Memorial in France on 1 July 2016 to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. Tickets for the event will be available through a public ballot opening later this year.
The joint Anglo-French commemoration of the Battle of the Somme is expected to attract great public interest, so tickets will be made available for the event. The 8,000 tickets will be allocated in pairs, free of charge, through a public online ballot. The ballot will be open to residents of the UK, France and Ireland on 28 September 2015. At Pam's request I attended the funeral of Paddy as Standard Bearer of the Y Branch of the Royal British Legion. I would have been there in any case as a friend having served in many locations with Paddy and Pam. The service was well attended although only 12 ex R Sigs were present but I am sure this was because of the very short notice for the funeral. The reception at the White Horse in Quorn was very good as Andrew had fitted up a projector showing photos of periods of Paddy's service.

Although Jeff was not a member of the BVA, he had served at 13 Signals Regt. in the late 60's, and I'm sure members will remember him fondly, as both Yvonne and I do.

Never served with Jim, however he was 13 SR family, only meet him at reunions. He was a little man with a big heart and he will be surely missed by all. I will attend his funeral. RIP XX

So so sorry to hear the sad news of Jimmy Coglan's passing, he always seemed to be so invulnerable, despite being so ill for so many years he always had the knack of bouncing back and was such a likeable and cheerful character. So, so sad to hear of the passing of Jimmy Coglan. Such a staunch supporter of the Royal Corps of Signals, both with the BVA and the RSA Loughborough Branch. We were also in the process of submitting him for his 50 year badge with the RSA. A great little guy with a mischievous sense of humour. We are going to miss you. We will raise a glass to you at our next meeting meeting at The Black Swan. Our love, prayers and thoughts are with Janice and family at this difficult time.

I have just been informed by Janice that Jim Coglan had a massive stroke last night and is now in the Stroke dept of the Leicester Royal Hospital. They are not very hopeful of the outcome. Janice asked me to pass this on to the vets and will let me know of any developments so I can pass them on.I am sure all our thoughts are with Janice and family during this worrying time.Regards to all George.

Sad to report the death of Keith Simpson, Int Corps, non BVA member after a short illness. Keith served in 13 from 1962 to 1965, mainly in Gatow, and to 1966 at 9 Sigs. We met as trainees in Marsefield and our friendship survived all those years. Sad commiserations to Maureen.The funeral will be in Liverpool but no details known yet.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news again, but Mick Conway died this morning. He was riddled with cancer so it can only be a blessed release for him, but our hearts go out to Margaret & the boys. Funeral will probably be in Doncaster, don't know when as yet.
