The Prince of Wales Hotel, Lord Street, Southport, PR8 1JS
The Gala Dinner will be held on Saturday, 19th September and will be a fairly casual affair. Dress is as you please so dress up or down as your mood takes you. It will be 3 courses with tea/coffee and then entertainment and all this will be held in the function room with its own bar and toilet facilities.
The Prince of Wales is a traditional Victorian building with lovely original features, including the original wrought iron lift. Unfortunately, this is no longer in service but has been retained as a special feature. There are, however, modern lifts in the hotel. There is a lovely bar and lounge area next to the restaurant and the ballroom is just off the main corridor from the lounge. The hotel is situated on Lord Street close to lots of shops, restaurants and bars (1 of 2 Wetherspoons on Lord Street is right across the road! Hotel bar prices are really good though as they try to compete with Wetherspoons prices)
The train station is about a 7-minute walk away.
The Promenade is roughly 100 yards from the Hotel and everywhere in Southport is flat so very easy walking. Just off the Promenade you have Princes Park, Southport Model Railway Village, Victoria Park, Kings Gardens and the promenade around Marine Lake. This lake is the UKs largest man-made saltwater leisure lake and is home to pedalos, motor boats, paddle boarding and high-speed power boat rides. It’s also lovely to walk around the area which covers 17 acres in all.
Either another walk or a 6 min bus ride will take you to “The Atkinson”, an elegant arts venue which also stages music, comedy and theatre in this lovely 19th century building.
Hesketh Park which again is within walking distance, is the largest of Southport’s parks and is home to nature trails, varied wildlife and a large lake. This scenic park was developed in the mid 1800s with Victorian landscaping, an aviary and a café. Southport is also home to the only Lawn Mower Museum in the world! The British Lawn Mower museum is located on Shakespeare Street. Close by there is Crosby, either a 28min bus ride, 20 min train ride or 14.3 mile car ride. Crosby lakeside is home to Antony Gormley’s “Another Place”, 100 spectacular life size figures scattered along the shoreline.
It’s easy to get to Ainsdale, Birkdale, Formby and Liverpool. The historic village of Churchtown is on the northern fringe of Southport and is well worth a visit.
You have a choice from: Royal Birkdale, Hillside Golf Club, Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club, Hesketh Golf Club, Southport Old Links Golf Club, Southport municipal Golf Club.
